Overcoming Overwhelm

Overwhelm is the condition of being unfocused and overpowered by emotions or obstacles...

What are you plugged into?

Think of yourself holding a power cord to plug into a wall that’s attached to your heart. There are 2 outlets in the wall you’re facing. One is negative, one is positive. Whichever one you choose to plug into, that’s the current you’ll get running back at you through the cord.

So many of us think we don’t have control over our thoughts, emotions, etc., and we end up OVERWHELMED. But, you do have control!

You may have strategies or habits so well known to you that they are automatic, so it appears to be out of your control. You can learn how to take back control.

It’s important to note that you can’t be plugged in to both sources at once. It’s impossible! You can go back & forth, but laser focus only happens with one thing at any given time. If you plug into positive and negative head talk comes in, then somewhere along the way you unconsciously plugged back into the negative!

Emotional Energy

Everything you’re resisting has a negative emotion attached to it in some way, shape or form. Once you figure out where it is and why it is there, you can dissolve the energy around it. Removing this emotional attachment is imperative, or there will always be triggers in your life that take you back to those negative thoughts and emotions.
Clarity

Your mind is drawn to clarity. In life you get what you are most clear about. The problem is most of us are crystal clear about what we don’t want, but not clear on what we do want. If you can’t clearly define what it is you want, you won’t ever get it! This is true in business, in relationships, and overall in life.

5 Ways to Clear up Your Language

Most of our language is unconscious, and I’ve identified several categories of disempowering language. Continued use of disempowering language can keep you stuck in overwhelm. With awareness, you can clear it up.
  1. Labels – anxiety or fear, when defined, can look and feel just like excitement. You’ll feel whatever you label your feeling, so be aware of your labels.

  2. Universals – words like all, never, everyone, nobody, etc. When you use these, you’re limiting yourself and probably lying, keeping yourself stuck in victim mode. Say exactly what you mean and mean exactly what you say.

  3. Unclear opinions – we all have our own opinions and definitions of certain concepts like respect, integrity, discipline, focus, and motivation. Be clear on what you mean when you use these words.

  4. Disempowering stories – when you talk about the things you “can’t” do, you’re stuck in your story and will continue to stay there unless you challenge it and change it.

  5. Owning words – when you use words ending with –ed, you’re identifying yourself with emotions. Remove it by changing things like overwhelmed to “I am overwhelming myself by…” and give yourself an opportunity to change it. When you know how you’re creating the problem, you can find the answer to fix it.
