Stop Selling! Start Serving...

Be careful how you advertise! And based on this photo, be careful what you're selling or serving!

Seriously, though, many people in direct sales have issues with selling – and so I’m going to offer this simple advice:

Stop Selling!

I don’t mean quit your business and get rid of all your products. What I mean is there’s another way to move the products off of your shelves and earn an income in the process, and it doesn’t involve any gimmicks, internet tactics, or blow-out sales. What it does involve is taking a look at sales from another perspective.

If you worked in a retail store, how would you interact with customers who came in? You would welcome them and perhaps ask how you could help, right?. In short, you would serve them.   Your business is the same.

Start Serving

Even though it is inherently different because no one’s walking in your door to look at what’s on your shelves (unless you do have a store-front), you can still adopt the same mindset of service.  Call your current customers and find out how you can serve them. Offer to serve them some new products or refill any orders they may have run out of by now.

Everyone Likes To Be Served

Unless its court papers or overdue bill notices, everyone likes to be served.   Think about it. Isn’t it nice to go out to eat and have someone serve you a meal?

When you look at sales from a serving perspective, it can shift how you go about your business.  Instead of getting nervous to make sales calls, you can get excited to serve people.

You can even build a list of potential customers by putting a box out in a location offering to serve them. Then follow up on any leads with your stellar service. They asked for it, so give it your best!

Sloppy Service Beats Superior Sales

Have you ever stumbled over your words or fumble through a presentation on your products?  If you keep in mind that you’re there to serve, it will still be a success.

On the flip side, you could have a flawless demonstration and a memorized sales script, but if there’s the pressure to buy, you'll probably strike out. Sloppy service beats superior sales any day.

Give it a try and tell me how it goes. I love to hear your stories and suggestions. Feel free to use the comment box below. ~SS
