I used to worry about things. That was until I realized what it was robbing me of – the ability to enjoy the present moment. So I’ve sent worry away.
Understand that worry only lives in the future. It's based on the possibility of something bad happening. But it hasn't happened yet. So keep your focus, attention and intention on the present moment, and your mind won't be able to create worry.
90% of the time, the stuff we worry about will never happen. And 9.5% of the time, even if it does happen, it won't be as bad as we thought it was going to be anyway. So what's the point? =)
Still, I know so many people who seem to welcome worry into their lives. They worry about the weather, they worry about what’s going on in the government, and they even worry that this article might be about them. Here’s what I have to say to those people:
Go Ahead, Worry Away!
If you feel the desire to worry, go ahead & worry away. Don’t let me stop you. But I do want to point out a few things that worrying does.
- Worrying puts your focus on what you don’t want, which can and usually will attract it to you.
- Worrying will not give you any solutions; it will only keep you stuck on the problem. Taking action is what will have an impact.
- Worrying sucks your energy and keeps you from paying attention to the present – which may actually be something enjoyable.
Now, let’s look at another option:
Go Ahead Worry, Away!
Sending worry away will keep you focused on the facts and help you find solutions to problems.
- Not worrying allows you to put your focus on what you want. If you’re not worrying, you can be anticipating potential positive outcomes (and attracting them to you in the process).
- Not worrying happens when you take action and initiative to change whatever it is you were once worried about. For example, if you’re worried about a fire in your home, you can create an emergency plan & practice it, and eliminate that worry.
- Not worrying allows you to stay present – you can focus on what is, rather than “what if?”
Challenge Your Worry
Here are some simple questions you can use to challenge your worry:
-
What are you worried about?
-
What’s the worst that can happen?
-
How likely is that outcome?
-
In the grand scheme of things, how bad is it on a scale of 1 – 10?
-
Is it temporary or permanent?
Are You Worried?
It’s up to you. You can always choose to worry and look at the worst-case scenarios – but what benefit does that bring? Unless you’re using your worry to help you prepare for or avoid exactly what you’re worried about, it’s a useless emotion.
Worrying will only bring you down.
So I say worry, away! What will you choose? Please share your thoughts in the comment box below. If you’re worried, tell me what worries you and how you might be able to send that worry away so you can Enjoy the Journey. ~SS
